"Five Women Wearing the Same Dress" takes on relationships and the search for love

Posted on Friday, September 30, 2022

Five Women Play Promo

In an upstairs bedroom in Knoxville, Tennessee, five bridesmaids avoiding the ostentatious wedding reception below share their perspectives on love and marriage and discover that they have much more in common with each other than the outrageous dresses selected by the bride.

“There is a wonderful zaniness and energy to the play, yet there are serious moments as well when these characters reveal personal stories and insecurities in their search for love in all the wrong places,” said Director Kim Barber Knoll, Professor of Theatre Arts.

Knoll said she wanted to direct an upbeat comedy for Homecoming.

“The play is a celebration of the spirit and sense of humor these characters possess in order to deal with all that life throws at them,” she said.

Hayleigh Sebaugh ’25, who is playing the role of Georgeanne, said her character is an emotional roller coaster.

“She is outspoken and wild and misses the thrill of her younger years,” she said.

In preparing for the role, Sebaugh said she had to imagine herself in Georgeanne’s shoes.

“I had to consider all the different aspects of that character's life,” she said. “I was able to really dive into her past and discover a lot about her.”

Sebaugh said this role challenged her more than other roles she has played because of the maturity and depth of the character.

“Even though it is a comedy, there are serious topics discussed,” she said.

Sebaugh previously performed in “A Few Good Men.”

Carlie Jones ’24, who is playing the role of Meredith, the bride’s younger sister who is annoyed with the entire wedding fiasco, said her character is witty, sarcastic and carrying a secret that gets revealed later in the play.

Compared to past roles, Jones said it was not as difficult for her to connect with Meredith.

“I have a lot in common with Meredith,” she said. Some of her previous shows included “Antigone,” “Tales from the Hill,” “The Mousetrap” and “A Few Good Men.”

Making their debut on the Price Theater stage are freshmen Aubrey Helton, Aria Mabry and Isabella Rapoza. They are playing the roles of Frances, Trisha and Mindy respectively.

Mabry said her character is like a mother figure for all the girls.

“She is the most experienced of all the women when it comes to relationships and she serves as the all-things-about-men therapist to them,” she said. Her character also has a scene with the only man in the play, Tripp Davenport, an usher, played by senior Dee Hare ’23.

When playing a role, Mabry said she can be outside of herself.

“Being in a performance of any kind is just taking me out of the world and putting me in a different place,” she said. “I can bring elements of myself into the character.”

Knoll said she has enjoyed working with this cast.

“They have terrific chemistry and energy that is necessary for this comedy.”

LaGrange College Theatre and An Affair to Remember will present “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress” by Alan Ball at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 through Saturday, Oct. 8 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9 at Price Theater.

The production's run time is 70 minutes with no intermission. The PG-13 comedy is not recommended for children due to explicit language and mature themes.

Tickets can be reserved online by emailing priceboxoffice@kongtiao11.com. The email must include the performance date and the number of people in the party. Tickets are $10. Seating is general admission, and the house will open 20 minutes before curtain. The show is free for faculty, staff and students.
